SUGAR HOUSE COMMUNITY COUNCIL BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING MINUTES
September 4, 2013
The regular meeting of the Sugar House Community Council was held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at 7:00pm, at the Sprague Library. Trustees in attendance were Carole Straughn, Deb Henry, Benny Keele, Matt Kierkegaard, Rawlins Young, Dave Mulder, Joedy Lister, Steve Lester, Scott Kisling, Cabot Nelson, Amy Barry, Judi Short, Christopher Thomas, Larry Migliaccio, Maggie Shaw, Sally Barraclough, Jack Perry, Shelia O’Driscoll, and Topher Horman. Christopher Thomas served as chair and Cabot Nelson as secretary. The trustees noted as excused were Annalisa Holcombe and Robin Bastar.
Call to order at 7:02pm. Cabot Nelson gave his secretary report. Motion to approve the minutes of the August meeting passed on a voice vote with an amendment to correct the spelling of Steve Lester. Motion to approve the petition for Ed Dieringer to represent Highland Park passed on a voice vote.
Police and Fire departments report
Captain Brett Key of Station 3 gave a report on the fire department.
SLPD Officer Scott Mourtgos gave a report on the police department.
Public comments
Chuck Hansel noted that at 1841 S. Yuma St., a “monster house” with 2 stories in the back will be built. Mr. Hansel expressed his opposition.
Committee reports
Judi Short reported for the Land Use and Zoning committee.
Sally Barraclough reported for the Parks and Open Space committee.
Deb Henry reported for the Transportation committee.
Laurie Bray reported for the Arts and Cultural committee.
Streetcar update
Bill Knowles could not attend. Russ (last name not recorded) who lives north of the streetcar line on Lincoln Street express his opposition to public pedestrian access from the streetcar walkway to 10th East and Lincoln Streets. Cabot Nelson moved to have the SHCC express its opposition, but it failed on the lack of a second.
Community group
Laurie Bray reported for the SH Merchants Association.
Special presentations
Jason Brown from SLC Public Utilities spoke of short-term and long-term plans for upgrades to the water lines and a new supply line from Millcreek Canyon to the west side of Salt Lake City.
Pending elections for SHCC leadership
Benny Keele of the Elections Committee announced the names of some trustees who have expressed interested in positions of leadership in the SHCC. Maggie Shaw is running for chair. For vice chair, Scott Kisling, Steve Lester, Judi Short, Deb Henry, Christopher Thomas, and Carole Straughn accepted nominations. Sally Barraclough agreed to run for secretary. Robin Bastar (through a prior message) indicated his candidacy for treasurer. In a separate message, Dolores Donohoo announced she is stepping down.
Each of the candidates in attendance spoke in turn, with Christopher Thomas withdrawing his name from consideration for vice chair.
City Presentations
Soren Simonsen gave updates about Salt Lake City Council.
Dolly Rauh reported on library events.
