June 2015 Chair Report

I want to use this month’s chair report to update you on a bunch of little projects that may not get a feature in our newsletter, but I field a lot of questions on throughout each month.
The official ribbon cutting for monument plaza is scheduled for June 12th at 5:30 pm. I am excited for our new pedestrian place, but we are already seeing damage from skateboarders. The benches, bike racks and brand new functioning fountain feature are being damaged. No skateboarding signs have been erected at either end of the monument. However, monitoring will take all of us. If you see skateboarders please call the police to report it 801-799-3000 is the non-emergency number.  Let’s work together to keep our plaza in the best repair possible so we ALL can enjoy it.

I am happy to write that the operation hours for the S Line will be extended at the end of August to match the hours for the Trax train schedule. That means you can utilize the streetcar to get downtown and not be stranded after 9:00 p.m.

The Draw is closed until late June to complete the art work on the west end. The tunnel is closed from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on weekdays so they can have their equipment on site. I’m told it is still open to pedestrians but during this time bicycles are restricted. Fundraising efforts are still ongoing for the Sego Lily portion of the art on the east side.

The 4th of July fireworks question. At the time I write this the fireworks are not going to happen. The previous business owner who has been organizing this event for the past few years has decided he is not able to do this anymore. Without an event leader the fireworks won’t be happening. I’m told the minimum cost for a firework show is around $50,000. Anyone that wishes to take on this endeavor will find that the Sugar House Park Authority is willing to share all their knowledge of event requirements and contacts with firework technicians.

Sugar House resident Pat Shea submitted an application to the State History Board to list the Forest Dale golf course and clubhouse on the National Historic Registry. I’m happy to report his application has met with approval from the State History Board and has now proceeded to the National Park Service for final approval. Hopefully we’ll hear soon.

I hope you all get out there and enjoy the growing activities. The Sugar House Pub Crawl was a great success and the crowds for the Sugarmont Monday night events have been impressive. The art walk reports more people joining in every month. We have such a great community let’s enjoy it.
