[caption id="attachment_1196" align="alignleft" width="107"]Amy Barry Amy Barry[/caption] This newsletter begins my 2nd year serving as chair for the Sugar House Community Council. I am thankful for the opportunity given to me by the trustees to stick around for another year. I look forward to working with the new Executive Committee. The SHCC has been noticed of 2 important land use issues. I want to take a moment to remind my neighbors of the process.  The SHCC is not a decision making body for Salt Lake City. We are a community voice. The land use developments we will be presenting is our effort to collect your voices. We make recommendations to the developers, but they are under no obligation to modify their plans. ALL COMMENTS are included in the report we submit to the planning office and the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission will make the final decision to grant the petitioners request. While we do our best to represent the voices we heard it is very important that people show up to the Planning Commission meeting. We won't know the exact date until December, but we'll keep everyone informed through the newsletter list, website and facebook.

Please take the time to get involved, be informed and be a voice for your neighborhood. Once again the SHCC is sponsoring a Candidate forum for Salt Lake City Mayor and City Council District 6 candidates. October 21st is the date and you can find more information below. Please don't miss this opportunity to meet the candidates, ask questions and be informed. Ballots will be mailed out around October 5th so hand on to them. If you do not receive a ballot in the mail around that time call 385-468-7400 to request one. Public hearing regarding the proposed relocation of Fire Station #3 to the south end of Forest Dale parking lot has been set forOctober 20th. The city council will take public comments regarding this issue at their meeting. You can check for meeting agendas as the date gets closer for the time. Anyone interested can also read the report submitted by the planning commission to the city council. If you are unable to attend the meeting you can submit comments to council.comments@slcgov.com.

[caption id="attachment_1196" align="alignleft" width="107"]Amy Barry Amy Barry[/caption] The SHCC and neighboring community councils will again partner together to host a Mayoral and City Council District 6 debate. We will be alerting people mostly by facebook so please take a moment and like our page to stay on top of issues. Summer is wrapping up, but we still have so much going on in our area. I have been out riding my bike along Parley's Trail and have thoroughly enjoyed the new connectivity of neighborhoods. Parley's Trail is an effort to connect the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to the Jordan River Parkway. The Salt Lake City portion is nearly complete, but work still continues on the section from 1700 E to Tanner Park. Salt Lake City Engineering should be sending out the majority of this section to bid with work commencing in the fall. This trail is a great amenity for residents to more easily enjoy walking or bike riding without being alongside traffic.

Times have certainly changed from when Sugar House was dirt roads and farm land. The photo I found in the Giovale Digital Library of Westminster Campus certainly shows how our community has been in constant flux to what we live now.1300 E Westminster Make sure you check out our events page to not miss out on all the fun activities.  The SHCC tries to help highlight all the events, but we know we miss some. [caption id="attachment_1196" align="alignleft" width="107"]Amy Barry Amy Barry[/caption] Happy July! This month starts off with the 4th of July festival in the heart of Sugar House. Thank you to the Sugar House Chamber for their work to pull off this festival and fApollo Burger for returning as the lead sponsor to bring you the fireworks! We celebrate Independence Day and our freedom, but I am left wondering how engaged we are in the rights and freedom we are afforded. Salt Lake City has a primary election for Mayor this year and an estimated 20% of registered voters will actually vote. We celebrate the independence and freedom on the 4th of July as an honored tradition. Yet, too many citizens are not engaged in electing our leaders.

[caption id="attachment_1196" align="alignleft" width="107"]Amy Barry Amy Barry[/caption] I want to use this month's chair report to update you on a bunch of little projects that may not get a feature in our newsletter, but I field a lot of questions on throughout each month. The official ribbon cutting for monument plaza is scheduled for June 12th at 5:30 pm. I am excited for our new pedestrian place, but we are already seeing damage from skateboarders. The benches, bike racks and brand new functioning fountain feature are being damaged. No skateboarding signs have been erected at either end of the monument. However, monitoring will take all of us. If you see skateboarders please call the police to report it 801-799-3000 is the non-emergency number.  Let's work together to keep our plaza in the best repair possible so we ALL can enjoy it. I am happy to write that the operation hours for the S Line will be extended at the end of August to match the hours for the Trax train schedule. That means you can utilize the streetcar to get downtown and not be stranded after 9:00 p.m.

[caption id="attachment_1196" align="alignleft" width="107"]Amy Barry Amy Barry[/caption] Even though it is snowing as I begin this month's chair report I wanted to focus on the move into spring. I wanted to focus on the rise of outdoor activities in Sugar House and highlight pedestrian safety. We live in an area that experiences high volumes of traffic, especially during rush hour. I realize motorists complain about the traffic and how long it takes to move along 1300 E and 2100 S, but I would like to remind everyone that these arterial roads are adjacent to residential areas. It is a balance between moving vehicles and providing safe walking routes for residents. I don't think we've found that balance as I regularly get emails from people complaining about various crosswalk areas being unsafe for pedestrians. More people are out walking and riding bicycles as the weather warms up. The issue of pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers need to pay extra attention to pedestrian crosswalks. Every day I see a car drive right through when a pedestrian is either ready to step out or in the crosswalk! Likewise pedestrians need to respect these rules and refrain from jaywalking because they don't want to walk a little ways to the designated crosswalk.

[caption id="attachment_1196" align="alignleft" width="107"]Amy Barry Amy Barry[/caption] I admit that I have been anxiously waiting to be able to write about the opening of monument plaza or at the very least the removal of the fencing. The construction in the business district has been a lot to live through and I, for one am glad to see some relief in sight. When the construction fences came down on the monument I did a little jig (in my head) of joy. I am reminded about the diverse views of our community by the variety of comments surrounding the creation of monument plaza. This project is a reflection of the Sugar House Master Plan, which was a community effort. The city and SHCC look to this document to guide us. This is another prime example of why your participation matters.  We are advocating to SLC Planning that it is time to update our master plan to reflect what has been accomplished and the changes we've experienced. When that time comes I hope many step up to be part of that process.
