Summer in Sugar House is packed with free events that make our community so amazing.
Times have certainly changed from when Sugar House was dirt roads and farm land. The photo I found in the Giovale Digital Library of Westminster Campus certainly shows how our community has been in constant flux to what we live now.
Make sure you check out our events page to not miss out on all the fun activities. The SHCC tries to help highlight all the events, but we know we miss some. If you want to be included on our calendar just send us an email sugarhousecouncil@yahoo.com.
The SHCC is more about highlighting events. Our mission is to help give our community a voice. We sponsored a Mayoral debate July 28th in an effort to give you all access to the candidates to make an informed choice. What a turnout. Approximately 300 people attended that evening. We will be sponsoring another one for the general election.
Sally Barraclough our Parks, Open Space & Trails chair has been working with UDOT to try and clean up the I-215 interchange. So far UDOT has cut down dead and dying trees along the fence line to Sugar House Park and we continue to try and get them to do some weed maintenance. The overall landscaping of this area is up to the city and up to us as a community to pitch in.
We have also been working with our city council representative on a number of issues. The half torn down car wash on 2100 South and Windsor St has been an eyesore for over a year. It has not gone unnoticed by us, but we have been unable to get any movement on this issue. The landowner began demolition without a permit and once ordered to stop by the city they have chosen to put a fence up and call it good. This is a gaping loophole in city ordinance that allows this semi done demolition to remain in perpetuity. We continue to try and get some movement on this, but we encourage all those that want to voice their opinion to do so at council.comments@slcgov.com.
The SHCC is also working to identify areas that need crosswalks. If you know of particular intersection within neighborhoods or busy streets that can be dangerous to pedestrians and benefit from a crosswalk please forward that information on so we can get that area on our list and have the city review it.
All these little things add up to a great community and neighborhood to live in. Please consider getting involved on one of our committees and make your voice heard.
